The Environment and Resource Development Department has, for almost 20
years, been actively involved in the mineral extraction and waste
management sectors.
As these industries have evolved over time through
technological and regulatory change the Department's emphasis has
changed with them to include new and innovative developments across the
board in the mineral extraction, waste management and, more recently,
the renewable energy sectors.
The Department has a number of mineral extraction interests including
sand and gravel and hard rock quarries, peat extraction sites and
secondary aggregate operations.
Having had a firm base in
landfill developments for many years, the Department
has expanded its waste management activities into
recycling, composting and other sustainable waste management
operations.
With the
benefit of owning transport infrastructure such as railways and the
Manchester Ship Canal, Peel is also committed to promoting an Integrated
Waste Management Strategy for the Manchester and Mersey Corridor
Sub-Region, comprising a network of waste management facilities linked
by multi-modal transport options.
The renewable energy sector is a new and expanding industry and one in
which The Department has been involved for some time. In the early days
such activities were limited to landfill gas utilisation and small scale
hydro-electric schemes but now The Department is heavily committed to
wind farm developments both in England and north of the border in
Scotland.
The Department is continually seeking opportunities within both the
existing Peel property portfolio and third party ownerships and is well
placed in terms of both expertise and resources to deliver projects both
independently or as Joint Venture partners.
