Major Landmark Sculpture For New Office Development
Peel Holdings have commissioned a major landmark sculpture for the new ‘Venus’ office development, currently under construction in Trafford Quays. The new creation ‘Venus Trinity’ from established artist Colin Spofforth is set to become one of the most talked about pieces of art in the North.
Details of the sculpture give a glimpse of what is going to be a bold and stunning piece of art, and will undoubtedly become a new centerpiece of popular debate on public sculpture. ‘Venus Trinity’ certainly has presence standing at 35 feet on its graceful column. The complete sculpture will be situ at the Venus office at the end of the year.
The three nude female figures are striking and graceful sculptures. The figures are connected by the hands, each facing out towards the horizon, creating an equilateral triangle. Representing vitality and vision; the figures look out at 360° as if searching the land for new opportunities.
The bronze ‘Venus Trinity’ will weigh almost 5 tons, and when completed will be the result of over two years work. Colin Spofforth’s sculpture is both an artistic triumph and an engineering feat; each figure leans out at a 60° angle, with a distance of 12 feet between each face, and only a small circular base for the feet.
The sculpture dives out of a column of white-water that shoots out from the surrounding lake. The water reaches up 18 feet to the base of the sculpture, at an astonishing rate of 22litres per second.
The realistic nature of the sculpture challenges perceptions of figurative art being ‘old fashioned’ and ‘fuddy-duddy’, and proves that contemporary artwork can be uplifting, sensational and controversial. Both the artist and Property Company Peel Holdings are committed to bringing exceptional art to public spaces.
Colin Spofforth said:
“This sculpture presented me and my team with a series of unique challenges; not least in finding the right subject on which to base the figure in the sculpture. Like ‘The Runner’ at the City of Manchester Stadium, the technical skills of all concerned will prove crucial to the success of this project.”
