Pooches and pets in South Yorkshire can now take to the skies thanks to Robin Hood Airport’s new pet passport scheme.
Doncaster Sheffield Airport has become one of only six airports in the country to enable animals to jet off with their owners by giving them their own passport through the Anglo European scheme.
The process, which should be started nine months in advance, involves pets being fitted with a numbered microchip, the figure then being used for its passport and to identify them to authorities when they are entering or leaving a country.
Pets then need to be vaccinated against Rabies by having two injections and once results from the Government Laboratory confirm they are clear of the disease, pampered pups can be issued with their very own pet passport.
Thomson are currently the only airline allowing pets to travel on their planes in comfort from Robin Hood Airport and pets will need regular Rabies boosters to keep their passport valid.
The pets travel scheme has received backing from the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), who work to protect the rural environment, and government agency ‘Animal Health’ who protect the welfare of animals and aim to prevent outbreaks of serious animal diseases.
Jodi Stow, marketing and communications manager at Robin Hood Airport said: “We are thrilled to offer pets and their owners this fantastic service enabling them both to fly from Robin Hood Airport.
“To be one of only six airports in the UK to be offering the pet passport scheme is a huge privilege, and we hope that people in the region can benefit from such a unique convenience for their loved and cherished pets.”
