As Salford's new £26 million premier sporting and community stadium rapidly moves forward at Barton, The Peel Group / Salford City Council joint venture company set up to develop and run the stadium has taken the decision to discontinue the temporary name of City of Salford Community Stadium and adopt the permanent name of Salford City Stadium.
With a 12,000 crowd capacity, Salford City Stadium will be the new home for the City Reds, Salford's Super League Rugby Football Club, from the new season starting in February 2012. It will also provide a number of facilities that can be used by the resident and business communities in Salford, including outdoor sports pitches, changing rooms, office/meeting space and catering/bar services.
Councillor David Lancaster, Deputy Leader of Salford City Council, said: “ The construction of the stadium is providing new opportunities to promote Salford locally, regionally and nationally. With development proceeding apace and interest growing, we decided that a simpler name is needed that local people and sports fans can get behind and use and which, in turn, will help boost recognition for Salford as a great city in which to live, work and invest. “
Ed Burrows, Property Director at Peel, added: “The name is important to increase the public’s awareness of the new stadium and promote it on a national level as well as a local and regional level. The construction is moving forward quickly and we are delivering a fantastic new community facility.”
