Mineral extraction holds an important position in The Peel Group’s history and Peel Environmental continue to own several sand, gravel and hard rock quarries.
Scout Moor Quarry near Bury is a source of the high quality Upper Haslingden Flagstone used in prestigious locations including London’s Trafalgar Square and Manchester’s Albert Square.
Fletcher Bank Quarry provides the raw materials to manufacture a range of concrete and natural stone landscape products.
Not all the minerals sold are dug out of the ground. More than 120,000 tonnes of sand is recovered from the approaches to the Manchester Ship Canal every year at the Bromborough Dredging Recovery Facility at Eastham in Wirral. This provides a valuable supply of sand to the construction industry from the essential dredging of the Canal.
Coal Bed Methane - Peel Environmental is securing land for the exploration and exploitation of coal bed methane (CBM). We are currently working with Petroleum Extraction Drilling License (PEDL) holders to create opportunities for the extraction of CBM as well as exploring other innovative processes like Underground Coal Gasification.
